Chemguard aqueous film-forming foam (AFFF) requires low energy input to produce a high-quality foam blanket that floats on the fuel surface. By quickly covering the fuel surface, AFFF provides fastest knockdown of hydrocarbon fuel fires (gasoline, kerosene, diesel, etc.). AFFF also is effective on Class A fires.
Chemguard AFFF agents provide excellent burn-back performance, superior drain time, and low application rates. Most of our AFFF formulations contain significantly less fluorine content than other UL Listed products on the market, without compromising fire-extinguishment properties.
Biodegradable and environmentally friendly, these agents are available as 1%, 3%, and 6% concentrates for use at the proportioning rate of the product (e.g., 1% would be 1 part concentrate to 99 parts water).

Chemguard alcohol-resistant aqueous film-forming foam (AR-AFFF) creates a physical, polymer-membrane barrier between the foam blanket and the fuel surface.   AR-AFFF suppresses Class B hydrocarbon fires (diesel, gasoline, kerosene, etc.) and polar solvent/water-miscible fuel fires (alcohol, ketones, methanol, and MTBE products). In addition, AR-AFFF suppresses the hazardous vapors emitted from fires or spills of these materials.

Biodegradable and environmentally friendly, AR-AFFF also is effective on Class A fires.

Chemguard fluoroprotein foam concentrates are more resistant to fuel contamination/pickup than similar agents. Based on hydrolyzed protein, with the addition of fluorocarbon surfactants, these non-synthetic concentrates are UL 162 Listed and UK Ministry of Defense 42-40 approved.

High Expansion Foam

Chemguard synthetic-based high-expansion foam concentrates are suitable for use with low-, medium-, and high-expansion foam generating equipment.  Our high-expansion foam concentrates can control and extinguish fires involving solid materials as well as flammable liquids.  In addition, our high-expansion foam concentrates exhibit special advantages with spills of liquefied natural gas.

Normally applied at a proportioning rate of 2%, Chemguard high-expansion foam concentrates generally are used in contained areas, such as mines and ship holds, where volume fire control is required.  A high-expansion generator can be used to fill an entire area with very light, highly expanded foam bubbles, with ratios as high as 1,000 to 1 possible.

Chemguard produces low-temperature foam concentrates for both hydrocarbon fuels and polar-solvent and water-miscible fuels. Chemguard 3% and 6% low-temperature aqueous film-forming foam concentrates (AFFF-LTs) are specially formulated for extinguishing Class B hydrocarbon fuel fires (diesel, gasoline, kerosene, etc.) in temperatures as low as -20° F. Our 3% alcohol-resistant aqueous film-forming foam concentrate (AR-AFFF-LT) is formulated for extinguishing Class B hydrocarbon fuel fires as well as polar-solvent and water-miscible fuel fires (alcohols, esters, ketones, etc.).

When proportioned with water, Chemguard Class A foam concentrate changes the water properties, reducing the surface tension and allowing for greater penetration into all Class A fuels. A mixture of foaming and wetting agents, Class A foam also gives the water a foaming ability, so it clings to surfaces without run off.

Chemguard Class A foam is effective in fighting forest fires and many deep-seated fires such as paper, tires, and wooden structures.

The Chemguard Bladder Tank is one component in a balanced pressure foam proportioning system.  It requires no external power, other than the water pressure to ensure correct operation.  The vertical and horizontal bladder tanks are designed and constructed in accordance with the latest revisions to ASME code, Section VIII for unfired pressure vessels with a working pressure of 175 psi and tested to 1.3 times this pressure.

SPECIFICATIONS

The tank shell is constructed of steel, complying with ASME specifications, possessing a tensile strength of not less than 70,000 psi.  The circumferential, as well as the longitudinal body seam, are machine welded.  The tank interior welds and edges are ground smooth.

The tank shell water inlet and tank shell water drain is screened to prevent bladder blow out or the entrapment of debris between the tank shell and the bladder. 

The vertical tank assembly is supported by four legs with access to the bladder drain/fill valve and the tank shell drain/fill valve.  Four feet are provided for anchoring the tank.  The horizontal assembly is supported on two saddles welded to the tank and fitted with anchoring holes.

Chemguard offers stainless steel, carbon steel, high-density polyethylene, and fiberglass atmospheric foam-concentrate storage tanks. Available in sizes from 200 to 3,000 gallons, these storage tanks typically are used in conjunction with balanced-pressure proportioning systems or self-educting monitor stations, both in fixed and portable applications. Designed to deliver foam directly onto the surface of flammable or combustible liquid and lessen submergence of the foam, Chemguard foam chambers are installed on flammable liquid storage tanks just below the roof joint.  Flow rates for these UL Listed, type 2 discharge devices (NFPA 11), can vary, depending on the application.

Foam solution is supplied to a chamber from outside the hazard area, either from a fixed foam-storage and proportioning system or from a dry-pipe semi-fixed system that receives foam solution from a mobile foam apparatus. Upon entering the chamber the foam solution is expanded and then discharged against a deflector mounted inside the storage tank. The deflector (split or solid) directs the foam against the inside wall of the storage tank, reducing the agitation of the fuel.

Designed as air aspirating discharge devices, Chemguard foam makers are used principally for the protection of dikes, open floating-roof storage tanks, and rim seals, and where low-velocity foam streams are desired.  Foam makers generally are installed in the line of a semi-fixed or fixed foam fire-protection system, mounted either horizontally or vertically.

UL Listed, Chemguard's foam makers feature all-brass construction for use in harsh and corrosive environments. Foam maker air inlets are covered with stainless tell mesh, and the foam makers are supplied with standard NPT threaded inlets and outlets.

Chemguard's unique, UL listed, water-powered oscillating monitors provide rapid blanketing for combating fires in aircraft hangars, on helicopter decks, and in tank farms and other high-risk areas.  The activating force for Chemguard oscillating monitors comes directly from the water inlet to a turbine waterwheel.  Because we have eliminated the need for filtration and the risk of blocked filters or small orifices, our water-powered oscillating monitors inherently are the most reliable oscillating monitors in the industry. 

Easy to set up and use, Chemguard low-maintenance water-powered oscillating monitors offer flow rates to 1,250 gallons per minute with a 3-inch waterway and 1,600 gallons per minute with a 4-inch waterway.  Users can specify a preset spray arc (such as covering an aircraft wing shadow area) at adjustable oscillation speeds (0 to 30 degrees per second).    No external wiring or hydraulic controls are required.

Mobile Dual High-Expansion Foam Generator

Chemguard Mobile Dual High Expansion Foam Generator was created to give users the ability to bring versatility to volume foam suppression. Users can now combat extremely volatile situations where other apparatus or methods have been ineffective. The unit can easily be mounted on a flat bed truck, trailer, or custom engineered to fit on most mobile apparatus. The first of its kind was specifically designed and built for the City of Chicago Fire Department.

The Dual Generator is not dependent on water pressure or electricity for operation. Two robust type hydraulic motors drive the generators. The expansion of the foam solution is achieved by spraying the solution onto a stainless steel inverted cone screen, and then an air stream created by the fan attached to the hydraulic motor forces air through the screen to produce a mass of foam bubbles. The continuous flow of the foam solution and the movement of air through the screen will generate large volumes of foam.

The 60-gallon unit holds 60-gallons of foam concentrate, has a 95-gpm in-line eductor prepiped to a fixed mounted continuous flow hose reel containing 100’ of 1.5” hard rubber hose and a hand line nozzle with ball shut off. The 36-gallon units holds 36-gallons of foam concentrate, has a 95 gpm in-line eductor prepiped to 100’ of 1.5” UL-19 flat fold hose and a handline nozzle with ball shut off. All that is required to place either unit in operation is to fill the foam concentrate storage tank with the correct type and quantity of foam concentrate and connect a suitable water source to the inlet of the in-line eductor.

The Chemguard Bladder Tank/Foam Station is a self-contained foam proportioning system that requires no external power other than suitable water supply to place the unit in operation. It is compact in size and consists of a 36 gallon vertical style bladder tank with a prepiped 2½” ratio controller connected to a continuous flow hose reel containing 75’ x 1½” hard rubber hose and nozzle.

Chemguard engineered and manufactured Twin Agent Systems combine the most advanced concepts of dry chemical and AFFF agents.  These self-contained systems utilize nitrogen to charge and expel a combination of dry chemical in one vessel (to extinguish the fire) and the premix foam solution in the other (to blanket the flame-free surface) through the twin hose assembly.  Very effective against 3-dimensional and pressurized fuel fires and spills as well as the securing, cooling and sealing ability of AFFF.  Most systems are designed with either one or two hose reels for manual fire fighting and can be fabricated with a twin agent monitor for use in extinguishing larger hazard fires.  Our systems can be easily activated automatically or individually with a simple lever or single hand wheel, to control the flow with a handline nozzle. Depending on unit size, handline flow rates vary from 5 to 8 lbs. per second for the dry chemical and 30 to 60 gpm for the premix AFFF solution. All components are mounted on a full skid assembly or can be trailer mounted for mobile use.

Chemguard’s Premixed Self-contained AFFF Units are designed for use in areas where flammable liquids are manufactured stored or transported. The unit can also be supplied with high expansion foam or Class “A” foam in lieu of AFFF as the premix solution for the structure, automobile, or fires involving Class “A” materials. Because the foam concentrate and water are already in a premix form the unit is fully self-contained and requires no outside water source, pumping equipment or proportioning device. Nitrogen cylinders are used to pressurize the unit and expel the foam solution through a hose reel containing 100 ft. of 1-1/2” I.D. hard rubber discharge hose and 60 gpm nozzle with ball shut off and pistol grip. If required, the unit can be equipped with the ability to divert a small portion of the nitrogen into the discharging foam solution to form an aerated mixture (CAFS). This is particularly useful if the unit is going to be used with Class “A” foam concentrate in premix form.

Chemguard designs and manufactures our own line of large, expertly engineered Dry Chemical Systems. The units are an effective means of controlling 3-dimensional Class “B” (flammable liquid) and Class “C” (electrical) fires.  Chemguard’s Dry Chemical Systems will effectively extinguish large flowing fuel and gas/liquid pressure fires where other types of equipment and agents may be ineffective.  Our systems are frequently used in offshore locations. These units can be provided in several different sizes ranging from 200 lbs up to 2,500 lbs.  The dry chemical is contained within an ASME coded pressure vessel with a working pressure of 200 psi.  The dry chemical is expelled by nitrogen cylinders mounted on the skid unit.  The nitrogen is supplied through a pressure-regulating valve into a manifold and then piped to the dry chemical storage container. The standard dry chemical skid is supplied with either one or two hose reels. Each hose is equipped with 100’ of 1” hard rubber hose and a nozzle with ball-shutoff valve.

Chemguard ABC dry chemical is a multipurpose, monoammonium phosphate based, dry chemical powder that is treated with flowpromoting and moisture repellent additives during manufacturing. ABC dry chemical is suitable for use as a recharge agent in most manufacturers' fire extinguishers that utilize monoammonium phosphate based dry chemical powder. It is very effective on fires involving ordinary combustible materials such as wood, paper, cotton, rubber, many types of plastics as well as fires involving flammable liquids and energized electrical equipment.  Because of its versatility, ABC is most suitable for use on combination fires involving Class A, B or C type fires together. Chemguard ABC is typically yellow in color, which differentiates it from the other dry chemical powders

EXTINGUISHING MECHANISM

When Chemguard ABC dry chemical powder is introduced directly into the fire area of a Class B type fire, it causes the fire to go out by interfering with the chemical chain reaction of combustion.  When the ABC powder is applied to a Class A type fire, the particles fuse and swell up to form a barrier (coating) that eliminates oxygen and thereby completes the extinguishing process and prevents reignition. 

FOAM COMPATIBILITY

All Chemguard dry chemical powders are considered foam compatible when used in conjunction with foam solutions generated by Chemguard manufactured foam concentrates such as AFFF, AR-AFFF, High Expansion, Training foams and Class “A” foams.

LIMITATIONS

Per NFPA Standard 10 Portable Fire Extinguishers, Chemguard does not recommend ABC dry chemical powder is used on fires involving cooking grease or vegetable oils. Suitable agents for these type fires are either sodium bicarbonate or potassium bicarbonate based powders.

STORAGE

Chemguard dry chemical powders are formulated so that they are not affected by long-term storage.  As a general guide all powders are stable at low temperatures down to -60ºF (-54ºC), with an upper storage limit of 120ºF (49ºC).

CAUTION

Never mix monoammonium phosphate based fire-extinguishing agents with bicarbonate-based agents in any fire extinguisher due to a chemical reaction that may occur

Chemguard “PK”, Potassium Bicarbonate Based dry chemical, is a premium powder suitable for use in high-risk areas such as: refineries, chemical plants and airfields where superior fire extinguishing capabilities are of paramount importance.   It is suitable for use on either Class B or C type fires.  Purple K is suitable for use as a recharge agent in most manufacturers fire extinguishers that utilize potassium bicarbonate based dry chemical powder. Airports have recognized the capability of “PK” and use it extensively in twin agent fire extinguishing systems.  It is also used in large “PK” dry chemical fixed systems covering LNG pumping stations.

When “PK” dry chemical powder is used on fires involving flammable liquids, it is generally accepted that when the powder is introduced directly into the fire area, it extinguishes the fire by interfering with the chemical chain reaction taking place in the combustion zone.

Chemguard BC dry chemical is a siliconized sodium bicarbonate based dry chemical that is suitable for use on either Class B or C type fires.  During the manufacturing process, it is treated with flow promoting and moisture repellent additives and checked for particle size.  BC Dry Chemical powder has long-term storage stability and is suitable for use as a recharge agent in most manufacturers' fire extinguishers that utilize sodium bicarbonate based dry chemical powder.  It is suitable for use on fires involving flammable liquid fires (Class B) including cooking oils, grease and energized electrical equipment (Class C). Chemguard BC powder is typically white in color.

When Chemguard BC dry chemical powder is used on fires involving flammable liquids, it is generally accepted that when the powder is introduced directly into the fire area it causes the fire to go out by interfering with the chemical chain reaction in the combustion zone.

FOAM COMPATIBILITY

All Chemguard dry chemical powders are considered foam compatible when used in conjunction with foam solutions generated by Chemguard.  Manufactured foam concentrates such as AFFF, AR-AFFF, High Expansion, Supertrain and Class “A” foams.

STORAGE

Chemguard dry chemical powders are formulated so that they are not affected by long-term storage.   As a general guide all Chemguard powders are stable at low temperatures down to -60ºF(-54ºC), with an upper storage limit of 120ºF(49ºC).

CAUTION

Never mix bicarbonate based dry chemical powders with monoammonium phosphate based powders in any fire extinguisher due to a chemical reaction, which may occur.

Chemguard in-line eductors provide an inexpensive and effective method of metering all types of foam concentrate into a water stream.  Our brass, corrosion-resistant eductors enable variable metering at 0%, 0.5%, 1.0%, 3.0% and 6.0%.  The Chemguard in-line eductor system includes the metering valve and an 8-foot pickup-hose assembly.

The Chemguard MINI-X-III and VARI-X-III are portable High-Expansion Foam Nozzles designed to provide rapid generation of a foam blanket for fighting spill fires and for vapor mitigation from spilled hazardous materials.  These nozzles are furnished complete with a matching foam eductor, and are lightweight, corrosion resistant, and ideal for many applications in both industrial, municipal, and other governmental fire services.  Both nozzles are furnished with an inlet pressure gauge for monitoring inlet water pressure.

The MINI-X-III and VARI-X-III nozzles produce copious quantities of finished foam while utilizing very little foam concentrate and less than 25 gpm of water.  These compact, lightweight nozzles have expansion ratios as high as 250:1, and can generate over 750 CFM (Cubic Feet per Minute) of finished foam.  This foam insulates exposures from radiant heat, cools the fuel, and eliminates oxygen, thereby quickly controlling and extinguishing flammable liquid fires.  In addition, the large volume of foam generated can quickly cover hazardous material spills, mitigate vapors, and help in controlling many hazardous conditions.

MINI-X-III FEATURES

The Chemguard Mobile Foam Cart is designed to hold 36 gallons of fire fighting foam concentrate and contains a 95-gpm in-line eductor, a 95-gpm handline nozzle and 50 feet of 1½" rubber lined single jacket fire hose.  The ease of handling and mobility of the foam cart makes this a very effective fire-fighting unit for flammable liquid fires.  To place the unit in operation, connect a length of 1½" fire hose from a suitable water supply source to the in-line eductor inlet.  Note: The in-line eductor design point is 95 gpm at 200 psi.  Any reduction in pressure at the in-line eductor inlet will create a corresponding decrease in flow.  The tank is manufactured of reinforced fiberglass, which makes the unit suitable for use with all types of foam concentrates and environments.

CAUTION

If using any of the AR-AFFF type foam concentrates in the unit, it is recommended that a thin layer of mineral oil be placed on the surface of the foam concentrate to minimize evaporation.
